The Monk – 2.5D Fantasy Adventure Game
Project Overview & Case Study
The Monk is an indie 2.5D atmospheric action-adventure game developed in Unreal Engine 5. Players step into the sandals of a wandering monk navigating a handcrafted, ancient fantasy world. The project merges responsive 2D platforming precision with 3D depth, dynamic Lumen lighting, cinematic cameras, and fluid combat mechanics.
The Challenge: Achieving tight, responsive platforming controls within Unreal Engine 5 while leveraging full 3D perspective, dynamic lighting, and realistic collision without visual camera clipping.
The Solution: Implemented custom character movement blueprints and C++ math for 2.5D plane constraint, combined with Unreal Engine 5 Niagara particle effects and Blender-modeled stylized assets.
